Chapter 15 - What Sophie Remembered

Police flooded the ballroom.

Julian ran.

He made it through the catering corridor, down a service staircase, and into the underground garage before Mara tackled him beside a loading dock.

Arthur was freed.

Claire handed detectives the recorder.

Julian's words were clear.

You were never supposed to die. Not unless you forced us into it.

Necessary.

Leverage.

Temporary discomfort.

For a man who had spent months manufacturing evidence, he had finally created the evidence that destroyed him.

But Dominic still refused to cooperate.

Dr. Halpern did not.

Faced with kidnapping, child endangerment, fraud, conspiracy, and controlled-substance charges, he began talking before sunrise.

He confirmed the dosing schedule.

He confirmed the staged psychiatric records.

He confirmed Julian had asked about drugs that could cause confusion without showing up easily on routine tests.

Then he said something that changed the case again.

"The first plan wasn't Sophie's trust."

Claire leaned forward in the interview room.

"What was the first plan?"

Halpern looked at his lawyer.

Then back at Claire.

"Bellamy Infrastructure."

Dominic had been siphoning money for years. Julian discovered it and joined him. Together they planned to force Arthur into a leadership crisis, use Claire's supposed breakdown as proof the Bellamy family was unstable, and take control through aligned board members.

Sophie's trust was the backup fortune.

"When Arthur started investigating," Halpern said, "Julian panicked. That's when the car plan appeared."

Claire left shaking.

Sophie was awake when she returned home.

She was coloring at the kitchen table.

Claire sat beside her.

"Daddy can't come here now," she said gently.

Sophie kept coloring.

"I know."

"There are going to be people asking questions. You don't have to remember everything at once."

Sophie finally looked up.

"I remember the lady with the red shoes."

Claire frowned.

"Vivienne?"

Sophie shook her head.

"No. The other lady."

"What other lady?"

"She came to the basement before Vivienne did. She told Dad where to put the camera."

Claire's skin prickled.

"What did she look like?"

Sophie reached for a black crayon and drew a square around a figure in the corner of her page.

"She works with Grandpa."

Claire went still.

"Do you know her name?"

May you like

Sophie nodded.

"Aunt Evelyn."
