Chapter 2 - The Blue Medicine

Claire's body went cold.

"What medicine?" she whispered.

Sophie glanced at Julian and immediately looked away.

Arthur heard enough to understand the fear in her voice.

"Call an ambulance," he told one of his security men. "And nobody leaves this room until my granddaughter is safe."

Julian laughed once, sharp and ugly. "You don't own the building, Arthur."

Arthur looked at him. "Tonight, I don't need to."

Vivienne reached for Julian's arm. "This is insane. Sophie threw a tantrum. Claire attacked me. There are witnesses."

"There are also cameras," Arthur said.

That wiped the smile off her face.

At the hospital, the dentist confirmed Sophie's tooth had been loosened by blunt force. A pediatric doctor photographed bruises on her upper arm and ribs.

Claire stood beside the bed while Sophie held her hand.

"Sweetheart, I need you to tell Dr. Reed what the blue medicine is."

Sophie swallowed. "Dad says it helps me sleep when I'm bad."

"How often?"

"When you go away."

Claire felt sick.

Her work trips. The charity board meetings. The weekend in Chicago. The three days in Dallas.

Every absence suddenly looked different.

Dr. Reed ordered blood and urine tests.

Julian arrived with two lawyers before the results came back.

"I'm taking my daughter home," he announced.

Claire stepped between him and the bed.

"No."

His eyes narrowed. "You really want to do this publicly?"

"You already did."

One of his attorneys held out a document. "Mrs. Mercer, there is an emergency family court filing. Mr. Mercer is requesting temporary sole custody based on concerns regarding your emotional stability and violent behavior tonight."

Claire stared at the papers.

"You filed this tonight?"

Julian didn't blink.

"No," the attorney said.

Claire looked down at the date.

The petition had been prepared twelve days earlier.

Twelve days before Vivienne struck Sophie.

Twelve days before Claire shoved anyone.

The filing described Claire as paranoid, unstable, and increasingly aggressive. It referenced private therapy sessions. It claimed Sophie had expressed fear of her mother.

Claire looked at Julian. "You planned this."

He smiled without warmth.

"I prepared for you."

Dr. Reed returned holding Sophie's lab report.

He did not look calm.

"Mrs. Mercer," he said, "we found a sedative in your daughter's system."

Julian stopped smiling.

Then Dr. Reed looked directly at Claire.

"And based on the concentration, this wasn't the first dose."
