Chapter 19 - One Year Later
One year after the gala, Claire sold the Malibu estate.
She did not care that magazines called it shocking.
The house had too many corners where Sophie had learned to listen for footsteps.
They bought a smaller place in Santa Barbara with a crooked lemon tree, an ordinary kitchen, and no hidden rooms.
Sophie chose a bedroom facing the ocean.
She painted one wall yellow.
Arthur visited on Sundays.
He no longer arrived with assistants.
Sometimes he brought pancakes. Sometimes he burned them.
Mara became head of security for Claire's new nonprofit, which funded legal advocacy for children caught in high-conflict custody cases.
Claire refused to name the organization after the Bellamy family.
Arthur did not argue.
Julian wrote letters from prison.
Claire filed them unopened with Sophie's therapist.
The future would decide whether Sophie ever wanted them.
Vivienne sent no second apology.
Dominic testified in three financial cases and disappeared into the federal system.
Halpern lost his medical license before sentencing.
Evelyn appealed.
Life did not become clean.
It became honest.
That was better.
The criminal cases ended before the year was out. Julian accepted a plea that guaranteed decades in prison. Dominic and Halpern pleaded guilty and cooperated. Vivienne still received prison time for conspiracy and child abuse. Evelyn took her case to trial and was convicted on the major counts.
