Chapter 18 - Sophie's Last Secret

Sophie climbed out of the bath and padded into her room wrapped in a towel.

She opened the bottom drawer of her dollhouse.

Inside was a small brass key.

"Dad dropped it when he yelled at me," she said. "I hid it because I thought he would be mad."

Claire stared at it.

A tag was attached.

B-14.

Mara recognized the format from the Bellamy Grand.

Basement storage.

Police searched locker B-14 before midnight.

Inside were three hard drives and a locked metal case.

The drives contained backups of everything Julian had collected: recordings, forged records, blackmail files on Dominic, payment logs for Halpern, and private photographs of Bellamy board members.

The metal case held something else.

A handwritten ledger.

Every payment.

Every bribe.

Every person involved.

At the bottom of the last page Julian had written two words.

EXIT PLAN.

Attached was a list of accounts containing more than thirty million dollars.

He had planned to betray all of them.

Vivienne.

Dominic.

Halpern.

Even Evelyn.

"He was going to disappear with Sophie and the money," Claire said.

Mara nodded. "And leave everybody else to blame each other."

The ledger destroyed whatever leverage Julian thought he had left.

Within days, charges expanded.

Conspiracy. Kidnapping. Child endangerment. Fraud. Attempted murder. Witness intimidation.

Claire expected to feel triumphant.

Instead she felt tired.

Sophie was the one who changed the mood.

She sat at the kitchen table eating pancakes and announced, "I want strawberry syrup."

Claire laughed.

"We don't have strawberry syrup."

"Then we should buy some."

Such a normal problem.

Claire wanted to frame it.

The doorbell rang.

Arthur stood outside holding a small velvet box.

Claire did not invite him in immediately.

"What is it?"

He opened the box.

Inside was Sophie's tiny lost tooth.

"The hotel staff found it after the police released the ballroom," he said. "I thought she might want it."

Claire stared at that absurd little piece of enamel.

Then Sophie appeared behind her.

"Grandpa!"

Arthur's face softened.

Sophie looked into the box.

"That's mine."

"It is."

She considered it.

Then she closed the lid.

"I don't want to keep the bad part."

Arthur swallowed.

Claire knelt beside her.

"What do you want to do with it?"

May you like

Sophie thought for a second.

"Throw it in the ocean."
