Chapter 1 - The Handcuffs at the Gate

The handcuffs clicked shut while six-year-old Sophie Callahan screamed Nora's name from behind the mansion gates.
"Please don't take her!" Sophie cried. "She didn't do anything!"
Nora Ellis turned as far as the officer would allow. "Sophie, go inside. Stay with Mr. Jameson. You're okay."
"I'm not okay!"
And behind those staff stood the Callahan family.
Nora looked at them through the rain.
Celeste smiled.
It was small. Almost invisible.
But Nora saw it.
Detective Hayes opened the cruiser door. "Ms. Ellis, watch your head."
"The jewelry was planted," Nora said. "So was the cash."
Grant gave a humorless laugh from the steps. "Of course it was."
"And I did not kidnap Sophie. I took her to St. Anne's because she needed an independent doctor."
Celeste shook her head. "You took a child without permission and then invented a story about her medication."
"Because you changed it."
That wiped away the smile.
For only a second.
Vivian stepped forward. "Officer, must the child hear this?"
Nora looked toward Sophie.
The little girl had escaped the housekeeper's grip and was running barefoot across the wet stone.
"Nora!"
An officer caught her before she reached the cruiser.
Sophie fought him with both hands. "Let me go! She saved me!"
Nora's chest cracked open.
Earlier that afternoon, an independent physician had looked at Sophie's bloodwork and quietly said, "Somebody needs to explain why this child has been receiving medication that does not appear in her current treatment plan."
Nora had barely made it back to the estate before police arrived.
They found a diamond bracelet in her room.
Twenty-four thousand dollars in cash beneath her mattress.
And a signed letter claiming she intended to take Sophie out of the state.
None of it belonged to Nora.
None of it was hers.
But the signature on the letter looked exactly like hers.
"Move," Detective Hayes said gently.
Nora lowered herself into the cruiser.
Through the glass, she saw Grant place a hand on Celeste's shoulder.
She saw Vivian turn back toward the house.
She saw Sophie crying beneath the iron gate.
And then Nora saw something else.
The second-floor playroom window.
A tiny yellow toy piano sat behind that glass.
One of its brass keys had been loose for weeks.
Before the police entered her room, Nora had used a butter knife to lift that key.
She had slid a microSD card beneath it.
Then pressed the key back into place.
Eleven videos.
Three audio files.
Two photographed documents.
Proof the Callahans had searched everywhere for.
Proof connected to Sophie.
Proof they had never found.
The cruiser pulled away.
Nora watched the mansion disappear behind rain and iron.
For the first time since the handcuffs closed, she allowed herself to breathe.

They thought they had won.
They had no idea the most dangerous thing in that house was still sitting inside a child's toy piano.
