Chapter 12 - The Man Who Deleted Everything

Miles Benton had spent twelve years protecting the Callahan family.
He knew every gate code.
Every blind spot.
Every hidden service corridor.
And every secret people assumed security staff were too invisible to understand.
"Start at the beginning," Ethan said.
Miles sat across from him.
Vivian refused to sit.
"This man is a thief and a liar."
Miles almost smiled. "That's rich."
Ethan slammed one palm against the table.
"Enough. Talk."
Miles did.
Eight months earlier, Grant had asked him to monitor Nora because she was "overstepping." Then Rourke asked him to redirect any medical complaint she made about Sophie.
"Why did you?"
"Money."
The honesty was ugly and simple.
"How much?"
"Two hundred thousand."
Nora stared at him.
"You sold a child for two hundred thousand dollars?"
Miles looked away.
"And the cash in my room?"
"I put it there."
Ethan's face turned dangerous.
"The bracelet?"
"Celeste gave it to me."
"The forged letter?"
"Rourke."
Vivian stepped toward the door.
Rachel blocked her.
"You may want to hear the rest."
Miles pushed the flash drive forward.
"I kept backups."
Vivian laughed sharply. "Of what? Your own crimes?"
"Insurance."
One recording was dated three years earlier.
The month Lillian Callahan died.
Ethan stared at the date.
"What is this?"
Miles swallowed.
"Your wife came to me because she thought someone had accessed Sophie's trust files."
"Lillian?"
"She wanted copies of security logs. I gave them to Rourke instead."
Ethan's eyes closed.
"Why?"
"He told me you already knew."
Miles clicked the audio file.
Lillian's voice filled the room.
"If Grant gets control of Sophie's shares, he can force Ethan out."
Then Rourke's voice.
"You're imagining a war that doesn't exist."
Lillian again.
"Then why did Vivian ask Vale whether a cognitive diagnosis could change trustee authority?"
Nobody breathed.
Ethan stared at his mother.
Vivian's face had lost all color.
The recording continued.
Lillian said, "I'm changing the trustees tomorrow."
The file ended.
Rachel looked at Ethan.
"Did she?"
"Not that I know of."
Miles reached into his jacket and removed a small brass key.
"She tried."
May you like
He placed it beside the flash drive.
"This opens a safe-deposit box no one in your family has touched since the week she died."
