Chapter 14 - What the Crash Did Not Prove
Rachel refused to call Lillian's death murder.
"An invoice is not proof," she said. "Suspicion is not proof. We do not turn grief into facts because the story fits."
Ethan hated her for saying it.
Which was how he knew she was right.
The maintenance invoice showed Grant's office had authorized work on Lillian's car.
It did not show sabotage.
The archived crash report showed brake failure.
It did not show who caused it.
But a retired mechanic named Samuel Ortiz remembered the vehicle.
"Was it performed?"
"No. Corporate called and said only do the scheduled service."
"Who called?"
"Don't remember."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Another almost-answer.
Another missing name.
Meanwhile, Callahan Holdings was preparing for an emergency board session.
Grant controlled five directors.
Ethan controlled four.
Three claimed to be undecided.
"They don't need to prove you're unfit forever," Rachel explained. "They only need enough confusion to freeze your authority for one vote."
Nora looked at Ethan.
"So all of this can still work for them even after we've exposed the medication?"
"If the board treats it as a family dispute instead of fraud," he said.
"Then make it impossible to call it a family dispute."
He looked at her.
"How?"
Nora thought of the eleven videos.
"Stop protecting the Callahan name."
Silence.
Ethan had spent his entire life doing exactly that.
Nora continued.
"Release the footage to investigators. All of it. Even the parts that make you look blind."
"It could cut the company's value in half."
"And?"
He almost smiled.
"You really don't care about the company."
"I care about Sophie. That's the difference everybody in this story keeps missing."
That night, Ethan authorized Rachel to deliver the files to prosecutors, trust regulators, and the board's independent audit committee.
At 11:32 p.m., Grant called him.
"You just destroyed the family."
Ethan stood beside Sophie's hospital bed.
She was asleep naturally for the first time in weeks.
"No," he said.
"I stopped helping you hide what was already broken."
Grant's breathing changed.
"You think Nora is going to save you?"
"This isn't about saving me."
"Then ask your precious nanny what she forgot to tell you about her own brother."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Grant laughed softly.
"You never wondered why Nora knew so much about Callahan Medical Services?"
The line went dead.
Ethan turned slowly toward Nora.
