Chapter 11 - The Matriarch

Vivian Callahan did not deny the payments.
That was worse than denial.
"I funded medical planning," she said. "That is not a crime."
"You funded a company that billed Sophie's trust two-point-eight million dollars."
"For her care."
"Care she did not receive."
Vivian's eyes moved toward Nora.
"And now the nanny is auditing us?"
Nora remained standing.
"The nanny noticed your granddaughter couldn't stay awake."
Vivian ignored her.
"Ethan, send her out."
"No."
The single word changed the room.
Vivian's face hardened.
Ethan placed the lab report on the table.
"Sophie was receiving an unauthorized sedative."
For the first time, Vivian's expression changed.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
Nora saw it.
So did Ethan.
"You knew," he whispered.
"I knew Dr. Vale was trying to stabilize her sleep."
"With medication nobody prescribed?"
"I knew he believed consistency was necessary."
Ethan laughed once, without humor.
"Consistency."
Vivian leaned forward. "You have spent ten years treating this company like a moral experiment. Your father built an empire. Grant protects it. I protect it. You keep trying to make it gentle."
"What does that have to do with Sophie?"
"Everything."
The word landed heavily.
Vivian looked at Nora now.
"Lillian never understood the burden of this family. She tied seventeen percent of the company to a child and surrounded it with sentimental restrictions."
Ethan's face went white.
"She was protecting Sophie."
"She was weakening governance."
"She's your granddaughter."
Nora stepped closer.
"So you made her look impaired."
Vivian's gaze snapped toward her.
"Be careful."
"No. You be careful."
Ethan turned to Nora, startled.
She did not stop.
"You let them build a record saying Sophie couldn't understand her own life. You let them make her tired, confused, dependent. Then when I noticed, you let police drag me out of the house."
Vivian stood.
"You have no idea who you're speaking to."
Nora's voice stayed level.
"A grandmother who chose voting shares over a little girl's voice."
Silence filled the library.
Then the door opened.
Miles Benton walked in.
Every person turned.
Ethan's hand tightened.
"Where have you been?"
Miles looked exhausted.
Vivian went still.
Miles placed a flash drive on the table.
"I deleted the camera clips. I intercepted Nora's reports. I helped plant the cash."
Nora felt the room tilt.
Miles looked directly at Ethan.
"But I didn't start this."
May you like
He pointed at Vivian.
"She did."
