Chapter 13 - Lillian's Box

The safe-deposit box was in a bank forty minutes from the city.
Not Callahan National.
Not a bank connected to the family.
That alone told Ethan how frightened Lillian had been.
Inside was a blue folder, a sealed letter, and a small silver recorder.
Rachel examined the folder first.
"This is an executed trustee amendment."
Ethan leaned closer.
Lillian had removed Vivian and any future spouse of Ethan from trustee eligibility.
In their place, she named an independent fiduciary company and Ethan jointly.
The document had been notarized.
Witnessed.
Valid.
But never filed with the family trust office.
"Rourke buried it," Ethan said.
Rachel nodded. "Looks that way."
Nora stood near the vault door.
At least that was what she told herself.
The truth was simpler.
Ethan opened the sealed letter.
His hands shook before he reached the second paragraph.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, someone prevented me from fixing what I found.
Grant believes the company belongs to whoever can control it. Your mother believes family reputation matters more than individual freedom. Malcolm has helped them turn legal paperwork into weapons.
Do not let them use Sophie as a voting block.
She is a person before she is an heir.
Ethan stopped reading.
Nora looked away to give him privacy.
He continued.
I am also worried about Dr. Vale. He asked questions about childhood competency that made no medical sense. If anyone ever tells you Sophie cannot understand her own interests, get another doctor.
The letter ended with three words.
Believe her first.
Ethan sat down hard on the small bank chair.
"She knew."
Rachel touched the silver recorder.
"There's still this."
They played it.
Lillian sounded tired.
"Today Vivian told me I was making Ethan weak. She said the board needed stability and Sophie needed to be protected from my influence. I asked what that meant. She said, 'You'll understand when the right people are in place.'"
A pause.
Then Lillian whispered, "I don't think this is only about money. I think they believe they own him."
The recording ended.
Ethan stared at the floor.
Nora finally spoke.
"What happened the week she died?"
He looked up.
"Car accident."
Rachel's face changed.
"Was there an investigation?"
"Yes."
"Who handled the family's side?"
Ethan already knew the answer.
"Malcolm Rourke."
Nora felt cold.
Then Rachel found one final item beneath the folder.
A maintenance invoice for Lillian's car.
Stamped PAID.
