Chapter 17 - The Company Behind the Lawyer

Malcolm Rourke had spent twenty-six years telling the Callahans what the law allowed.

Apparently, he had spent nearly as long building a company that could own them.

Seventeen-point-four percent.

Enough to replace the voting block Grant had expected from Sophie.

"This was never just Grant's coup," Ethan said.

Rachel shook her head. "Rourke was building leverage over all of you."

Nora studied the ownership chart.

"Then why help Grant?"

The board meeting was two hours away.

Ethan could not stop it.

But he could change what the directors knew before they entered the room.

He authorized release of the trust-forgery report to the audit committee.

Then Daniel Ellis joined by video and explained the hidden vendor system.

Then Dr. Vale called.

His voice shook.

"I want immunity consideration."

Rachel looked at Ethan.

"For what?"

Vale admitted signing Sophie's cognitive assessment after Grant and Vivian pressured him.

"I never diagnosed a progressive condition," he said. "The language was added after my draft."

"By who?"

"Rourke's office."

"And the medication?"

Vale went quiet.

"Celeste asked for something to help Sophie sleep during a difficult period. I authorized a short course under strict limits. The dosing records Nora described are not what I prescribed."

Nora's jaw tightened.

"Who had access to the medication?"

"Celeste. Miles. The family medical cabinet."

"And Vivian?"

"She called me twice asking whether drowsiness could support a competency concern."

Ethan looked away.

There it was.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not tradition.

Intent.

At 9:40 a.m., federal financial investigators entered Northstar Capital's offices with warrants related to undisclosed beneficial ownership and fraud.

At 9:52, Malcolm Rourke disappeared.

At 10:03, the Callahan board convened.

Grant walked in smiling anyway.

"You look tired," he told Ethan.

"You look unemployed."

Grant laughed.

"We'll see."

The independent director called the meeting to order.

Before the first vote, the general counsel stood.

"We have received notice that Northstar Capital's voting rights are temporarily frozen pending regulatory review."

Grant's smile vanished.

Then the conference-room doors opened.

Two investigators entered.

One walked directly to Grant.

The other approached Celeste.

"Grant Callahan? Celeste Callahan? We need you to come with us."

Grant looked across the table at Ethan.

"This isn't over."

Nora, watching from Rachel's office on a secure stream, whispered to herself.

May you like

"No."

"But now everybody can see it."
