Chapter 18 - The Last Person to Admit It

Vivian Callahan asked to see Ethan alone.

He refused.

So she asked to see him with Nora present.

That surprised both of them.

They met in the mansion library four days after the board vote.

Quieter.

Not peaceful.

Just honest enough to hear its own emptiness.

Vivian sat beneath the same portrait as before.

"I did not order anyone to harm Sophie," she said.

Nora remained standing.

"You keep choosing the narrowest version of innocence available."

Vivian's eyes flashed.

Ethan said, "Did you know the medication was being used to support a competency claim?"

A long silence.

"I knew Grant wanted a stronger medical record."

"Did you object?"

"No."

Ethan looked at his mother as if seeing a stranger.

"Why?"

Her answer came quietly.

"Because I was afraid of losing everything your father built."

"So you were willing to make Sophie lose herself?"

Vivian flinched.

It was the first time Nora had seen shame reach her.

"I told myself it was temporary."

"You told yourself whatever let you sleep."

Vivian looked at Nora.

"You hate me."

"I don't know you well enough to hate you."

That hurt more.

Vivian lowered her eyes.

Then she confessed one more thing.

Lillian had come to her the night before the car crash.

She had threatened to expose the hidden vendor system and remove Grant from the company.

Vivian called Rourke.

"I asked him to stop her from going public until we could talk as a family."

Ethan's face drained.

"What did he do?"

"He said he would handle it."

"Did you ask how?"

Vivian whispered, "No."

The room went cold.

"Did you know about the car maintenance?"

"Not until after the crash."

"And then?"

"Rourke told me it would destroy the company if questions were raised without proof."

"So you stayed quiet."

Tears filled Vivian's eyes.

"Yes."

Ethan stood.

"Then whatever happened to Lillian, you helped bury the questions."

He walked toward the door.

Vivian called after him.

"Ethan."

He stopped but did not turn.

"I'm your mother."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"And Sophie is my daughter."

He left.

Nora followed.

In the hallway, Rachel called.

"They found Rourke."

"Where?"

"Airport hotel under another name."

"Did he talk?"

Rachel paused.

"He asked for a deal."

Nora looked at Ethan.

May you like

Rachel continued.

"And he says he can prove who authorized the decision that put Lillian's car back on the road."
