Chapter 1 - The Night My Daughter Called for Help

The first thing I heard was my daughter screaming.

Not a normal scream.

Not the kind of scream a child makes after falling or breaking a toy.

It was the sound of a little girl watching the person she trusted most become afraid of the person who was supposed to protect her.

"My name is Emily Carter, and before that night, I believed I knew my own life."

I lived in a quiet neighborhood outside Chicago with my husband Ryan and our eight-year-old daughter, Lily.

From the outside, we looked like the perfect family.

A beautiful house.

A successful husband.

A happy child.

Pictures on social media that made everyone believe we had everything.

But pictures never show what happens after the camera turns off.

That night started like any other.

I was cleaning up dinner when I heard the garage door open.

Ryan was home.

But something was wrong.

The moment he walked into the kitchen, I knew.

His face was tense.

His eyes were cold.

He threw his keys onto the counter.

"Where were you this afternoon?"

I looked at him.

"What?"

"You heard me."

I dried my hands with a towel.

"Ryan, I was at Lily's school. I told you I had a meeting with her teacher."

He laughed.

A cold, humorless laugh.

"You're lying."

My heart sank.

"Why would I lie about that?"

"Because you think I'm stupid."

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table, finishing her homework.

She looked up.

"Daddy?"

Ryan ignored her.

"You embarrassed me today."

"What are you talking about?"

"The school called me."

I frowned.

"The school called you?"

"Yes."

"About what?"

He stepped closer.

"You know exactly what."

I didn't.

And that scared me.

Because Ryan wasn't asking questions.

He had already decided I was guilty.

"Ryan, please calm down."

That sentence made everything worse.

His expression changed.

"Don't tell me to calm down."

He grabbed my arm.

Hard.

Pain shot through my wrist.

"Ryan, stop."

Lily pushed her chair back.

"Daddy, leave Mommy alone."

Ryan turned toward her.

"Go upstairs."

Lily didn't move.

"Daddy..."

"I said go upstairs."

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she stayed.

That was when I realized something.

My daughter wasn't frozen.

She was protecting me.

And then Ryan shoved me backward.

My shoulder hit the wall.

I cried out.

"Stop!"

Lily screamed louder.

"STOP HURTING HER!"

For a second, Ryan looked at her.

Then his anger returned.

"You don't talk to me like that."

I saw something change in my daughter's face.

Fear.

Real fear.

And then she ran upstairs.

Ryan barely noticed.

He was too focused on me.

"You think you can make me look like the bad guy?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"You think people will believe you over me?"

I didn't answer.

Because I knew something.

Ryan wasn't trying to understand.

He was trying to win.

Then suddenly...

Everything changed.

Because upstairs, my daughter did something I never expected.

She picked up my phone.

And she called the one person she knew could save us.

May you like

Her grandfather.

Charles Whitmore.
