Chapter 17 - The Truth Charles Carried

The next morning, Charles finally told us everything.

No excuses.

No hiding.

Just the truth.

Twenty years earlier, before he became the billionaire everyone knew, Charles had made a business decision that changed many lives.

Including Michael's family.

"I thought I was making the right choice," Charles said.

We sat in silence.

"What choice?"

Charles looked down.

"I closed a partnership."

"And people lost everything?"

He nodded.

"I didn't see the consequences at the time."

I felt conflicted.

Because my father was not a monster.

But he was not perfect either.

For years, I believed there were good people and bad people.

But life wasn't that simple.

People could make mistakes.

The difference was what they did afterward.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Charles looked at me.

"Because I wanted you to see me as your father."

My eyes filled with tears.

"You are my father."

A pause.

"But I needed you to be honest with me."

He nodded.

"I know."

For the first time, I saw my father not as a powerful businessman.

But as a man who carried regret.

Later that day, Ryan came to me.

"I know you may never forgive me."

I didn't answer.

He continued.

"But I want Lily to know I tried to fix what I broke."

I looked at him.

"Trying doesn't erase what happened."

"I know."

"But it matters."

Ryan nodded.

That was the first honest conversation we had in months.

No excuses.

No anger.

Just two people accepting the damage.

That evening, the final evidence against Michael was released.

The world finally saw the truth.

But there was one more problem.

The public now knew everything.

Including the mistakes Charles had made.

And the question became:

Could a family survive the truth?
