Chapter 11 - The Truth Behind the Whitmore Name

The next morning, the world woke up knowing my family's name.

But not for the reason my father wanted.

The headlines were everywhere.

"Billionaire Charles Whitmore Accused of Destroying Former Business Partner."

"Family Empire Faces New Scandal."

"Hidden Secrets Behind Chicago's Powerful Family."

I sat at the kitchen table staring at my phone.

Every notification felt like another piece of my life falling apart.

Charles walked in.

He looked exhausted.

Not like the powerful businessman everyone knew.

Like a father who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

"Dad."

He stopped.

"I know."

"Is it true?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that silence hurt.

"Tell me the truth."

Charles sat across from me.

"Twenty years ago, I made a business decision."

"What decision?"

"I refused to invest in Michael's father's company."

I frowned.

"That's it?"

"No."

He looked down.

"The company failed after that."

I waited.

"Michael believed I caused it."

"Did you?"

Charles took a deep breath.

"I don't know."

That answer shocked me.

Because my father was always certain.

Always confident.

But now he sounded human.

"I was focused on protecting my own company. I didn't think about the people who would be affected."

I looked away.

"So Michael is right?"

"No."

Charles's voice became firm.

"Making a mistake does not justify hurting innocent people."

That was the difference.

Michael had suffered.

But instead of healing, he chose revenge.

And now he was dragging everyone into his pain.

Later that day, Ryan asked to speak with me.

I almost refused.

But something inside me wanted answers.

We met in a quiet room at my father's house.

Ryan looked different.

Broken.

Not angry.

Broken.

"I owe you the truth."

I crossed my arms.

"You owed me the truth months ago."

He looked down.

"I know."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

"Michael found me when I was struggling."

I stayed silent.

"He told me I deserved more. He told me you and your father were controlling my life."

I laughed bitterly.

"So you believed him?"

Ryan closed his eyes.

"I wanted to."

That answer hurt.

Because it meant the problem was not only Michael.

Ryan wanted the excuses.

He wanted someone to blame.

"Did you ever love me?"

Ryan looked at me.

The question clearly hurt him.

"Yes."

"Then why did you hurt me?"

He had no answer.

And that was the answer.

That evening, Charles received another message.

A video file.

He opened it.

And everyone froze.

May you like

Because the video showed Michael meeting someone else.

Someone we thought was on our side.
