Chapter 3 - The Man Behind the Mask

Ryan always believed he was the smartest person in the room.

That was his biggest mistake.

Because people who think they are untouchable usually stop hiding who they really are.

After Charles arrived, Ryan tried to change the story.

"I think there has been a misunderstanding."

Charles looked at him.

"A misunderstanding?"

"Emily and I had an argument."

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

An argument.

That was what he called it.

Not fear.

Not violence.

Not the way Lily looked at him.

Just an argument.

Charles stepped closer.

"My granddaughter said you hurt her mother."

Ryan forced a laugh.

"She's a child. She doesn't understand adult situations."

That sentence made Charles's expression change.

Because he understood something.

Ryan wasn't sorry.

He was still defending himself.

"Don't use my granddaughter as an excuse for your actions."

Ryan looked toward me.

"Emily, tell him."

I stared at him.

For years, I had protected his image.

I covered his mistakes.

I made excuses.

But that night...

Something inside me broke.

"No."

Ryan's face changed.

"What?"

"No, Ryan."

I stood slowly.

"You don't get to ask me to protect you anymore."

The room became silent.

Charles looked at me.

Not with pity.

With respect.

Ryan shook his head.

"You are really doing this?"

I looked at him.

"You did this."

Later that night, after police reports were filed and Lily was finally asleep, Charles sat with me in the living room.

"You should have called me sooner."

I looked down.

"I didn't want to destroy my family."

Charles sighed.

"Emily..."

"I thought I could fix it."

He was quiet.

Then he asked:

"How long has this been happening?"

I didn't answer.

Because the truth hurt.

"Emily."

I whispered:

"Months."

Charles closed his eyes.

"Months?"

I nodded.

"He always apologized."

"That doesn't erase what he did."

"I know."

"Then why stay?"

I looked toward Lily's room.

"Because I wanted her to have a family."

Charles's voice softened.

"She doesn't need a perfect family."

A pause.

"She needs a safe one."

Those words stayed with me.

The next morning, Charles's private investigator arrived.

He placed a folder on the table.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Charles opened it.

"What did you find?"

The investigator looked serious.

"Something concerning about Ryan."

"What?"

He pushed the folder forward.

"We believe last night's attack was not random."

Charles frowned.

"What do you mean?"

May you like

The investigator answered:

"Ryan had a reason to silence Emily."
