Chapter 11 - THE TRUST CLAUSE

Natalie’s estate plan had been written before Emma was born.

Olivia was the only child named at the time, but the document included future children automatically.

Adrian, as surviving parent, controlled the trusts.

If Adrian died or became legally incapacitated, control moved to a co-trustee.

Graham Holt.

Clara read the clause twice.

“And if Graham can’t serve?”

Adrian turned the page.

“Then the surviving spouse.”

Vanessa.

The room felt colder.

“How much?” Clara asked.

Adrian hesitated.

“Between both girls, current value is about two hundred and forty million.”

Clara sat back.

“So the stroller wasn’t just about framing me.”

“No.”

“It was about creating a record that your household was unsafe.”

“And provoking me.”

Adrian looked at his hands.

“If Vanessa could document violence, Graham could petition for emergency oversight. If something happened to me after that…”

“She becomes guardian.”

“Yes.”

A detective entered with news.

Mason Reed had been found alive in a motel forty miles north.

He had a gunshot wound through the shoulder.

“Who shot him?” Adrian asked.

“He says Vanessa.”

At the hospital, Mason refused to speak until Adrian entered the room.

“You always were stubborn,” Adrian said.

Mason laughed weakly. “You always paid enough for it.”

“Did you help kill Natalie?”

The laughter stopped.

“No.”

“You were in the garage.”

“I disabled cameras. I gave Graham access. I stole files. I did a lot I’ll answer for.”

“But not the brakes?”

Mason looked at the ceiling.

“Harlan cut the line.”

Clara inhaled sharply.

“Why?” Adrian asked.

“Because Natalie was going to federal investigators the next morning.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She was supposed to watch the hall.”

Mason’s voice broke.

“She tried to stop them.”

Adrian stared at him.

“What?”

“She changed her mind. She told Natalie not to drive. Graham grabbed Vanessa and threatened her. Harlan finished the job.”

“Then why marry me?”

Mason closed his eyes.

“Because after Natalie died, Vanessa learned something.”

“What?”

“That Graham had recorded her in the garage.”

Adrian felt sick.

Mason looked at him.

“He owned her with that video.”

Clara stepped closer. “And tonight?”

Mason swallowed.

“Tonight she stopped being afraid of him.”

May you like

“How do you know?”

“Because before she shot me, she said she was taking the children and disappearing.”
