Chapter 14 - THE LEDGER

The abandoned rehabilitation center looked dead from the road.
No exterior lights.
No cars in the front lot.
But thermal imaging from the police drone showed four people inside the east wing.
One adult in a ground-floor treatment room.
One infant.
Two figures moving through the upper corridor.
Adrian wanted to go in immediately.
The tactical commander stopped him.
“If you enter before we control exits, you become another hostage.”
“My children are inside.”
“That’s why you stay out of our way.”
Clara stood beside Adrian, arms folded tightly.
“I’m going in.”
“No,” Adrian said.
She looked at him.
“I know the pediatric wing. I trained here before it closed.”
“You worked here?”
“Natalie funded my certification program.”
Adrian stared at her.
Clara had never mentioned it.
“She helped me when my mother was sick. I never met her personally, but her foundation paid the tuition I couldn’t afford.”
That explained why Dr. Harlan knew her name.
It also explained why Graham might have feared her from the beginning.
Police entered through the loading dock.
Clara went with the medical team.
Adrian waited thirty seconds before ignoring every order and following.
Inside, the corridors smelled like dust and antiseptic.
A baby cried somewhere ahead.
Emma.
Adrian ran toward the sound.
In Treatment Room 4, he found Harlan holding Emma while Graham stood over an open floor safe.
Paper ledgers covered the table.
“Put her down,” Adrian said.
Graham turned slowly.
“I wondered how long it would take you.”
Harlan pressed Emma tighter to his chest.
Clara entered behind Adrian with two officers.
“Give me the baby,” she said.
Harlan laughed nervously. “You always did think you knew more than everyone else.”
“I know enough not to use a child as a shield.”
Police ordered him to surrender.
Graham lifted a hand.
“Before anyone does something dramatic, you should know the ledger in this room can destroy half the Vale board.”
Adrian’s eyes stayed on Emma.
“I don’t care.”
“You will.”
“No.”
Graham looked almost offended.
“That is your problem. Natalie cared about systems. You care about people. People are easier to manipulate.”
Clara’s voice sharpened. “That’s what you told Vanessa, isn’t it?”
Graham smiled.

Then a gunshot cracked from the upper floor.
Olivia screamed.
