Chapter 16 - NATALIE’S LAST RULE

Adrian read Natalie’s letter in a hospital waiting room while Emma slept against Clara’s shoulder and Olivia rested with her head in his lap.

The letter was six pages long.

Natalie wrote about the fraud.

About Graham.

About Mason.

About Vanessa’s fear.

But most of the letter was about Adrian.

You love by protecting, she wrote. Sometimes you confuse protection with control. If something happens to me, grief will make you want a villain before you have facts. Please resist that. Anger is fast. Truth is slower.

Adrian stopped reading.

Clara looked at him.

“What does it say?”

“That she knew me.”

He folded the letter carefully.

“She knew exactly what I would become when I was scared.”

Clara did not say the obvious thing.

That fear had made him hit her.

He said it himself.

“I failed her rule the first night this started.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“No.” Adrian looked at her. “I don’t want ‘I know’ to become a substitute for consequences. Vanessa keeps saying it. I don’t get to.”

Clara’s expression changed.

Adrian continued. “You decide whether you ever work in my house again. You decide whether you want charges filed for what I did. You decide what distance you need from me. None of that changes because I’m grateful.”

For the first time since the slap, Clara looked at him without anger.

“Good,” she said quietly.

A detective entered.

Graham and Harlan were in custody.

Vanessa had surrendered her weapon and agreed to cooperate.

Mason was still missing.

The old ledger documented $31 million in fraud over five years.

It also contained a payment made three days before Natalie’s crash.

To Mason Reed.

Amount: $250,000.

Memo: VEHICLE SECURITY MODIFICATION.

Adrian’s face went hard.

The detective continued.

“There’s more. We found a second payment after Natalie died.”

“To who?”

The detective hesitated.

“To someone using Clara Moreno’s Social Security number.”

Clara went pale.

“What?”

The payment was $90,000.

It had been sent to an offshore account.

Adrian looked at her.

Clara stared back.

Neither spoke.

Then Olivia sat upright.

“Dad.”

Her eyes were fixed on the ledger copy.

“That account code.”

“What about it?”

“I saw it in Vanessa’s office.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Olivia swallowed.

“It was on a folder labeled CLARA EXIT PLAN.”
