Chapter 18 - THE OLD MAN’S NAME

Victor Vale had been dead for six years.

He had founded Vale Meridian, built the family fortune, and taught Adrian that loyalty mattered more than affection.

He had also hated Natalie’s foundation.

Called it wasteful.

Called her idealistic.

Called Adrian weak for letting philanthropy touch corporate assets.

“What does my father have to do with this?” Adrian asked.

Vanessa looked through the glass at the detective recording everything.

“Mason started moving money for Victor. Small amounts. Political donations. Private settlements. Graham learned about it and took over after Victor died.”

“And Natalie found the trail.”

“Yes.”

“Did my father order anything against her?”

“No. He was already dead when Graham escalated.”

Adrian almost felt relief.

Almost.

Vanessa continued. “But Victor created the system. Hidden vendors. Off-book approvals. Security access no auditor could see. Graham inherited the machine.”

The family secret was not one villain.

It was infrastructure.

A system built to hide what powerful men did not want examined.

Natalie had threatened it by insisting everything be documented.

Clara had threatened it by asking questions about Emma.

Olivia had threatened it by making copies.

Adrian had benefited from it without knowing its full shape.

That truth hurt in a different way.

When he returned home, he did not go to his office.

He went to the foyer.

The stroller had been removed, but one scratch remained on the marble where its frame had struck the floor.

Clara stood near the staircase.

“You can repair that,” she said.

“I know.”

“Are you going to?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I need to remember what certainty cost me.”

Police radios crackled from the front drive.

Then every light in the foyer went out.

A second later, the security alarm died.

Clara’s head snapped up.

“Mason.”

Adrian pulled out his phone.

No signal.

From upstairs came the unmistakable sound of glass breaking.

Emma began crying in the nursery.

Olivia shouted, “Dad!”

Adrian ran.

He reached the landing in time to see a dark figure disappear into Emma’s room.

Clara was one step behind him.

They entered together.

The crib was empty.
