Chapter 17 - THE EXIT PLAN

Police searched Vanessa’s office under warrant.
The folder was exactly where Olivia remembered.
Inside were forged bank statements, fabricated background-check notes, and a resignation letter Clara had never written.
There were also photographs of Clara meeting with an unidentified man outside St. Catherine’s Hospital.
The images were real.
Clara stared at them.
“That’s my brother.”
“Why was it in Vanessa’s file?” Adrian asked.
“To make it look secret.”
The detective nodded. “The offshore payment was designed to be discovered later. If the stroller plan worked, Clara would be accused of endangering Emma. Then financial records would appear showing she’d been paid.”
“Paid by whom?” Olivia asked.
“Likely one of Graham’s shell companies.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“They were building a story.”
Adrian understood.
Not evidence.
A story.
A nanny with financial problems.
A baby repeatedly sedated.
A dangerous stroller incident.
A frightened wife.
An angry father who struck an employee.
And financial proof that the nanny had taken money.
Graham could use the chaos to challenge Adrian’s fitness, gain emergency oversight, and move the trusts before anyone understood what happened.
Vanessa had been both participant and future disposable witness.
“She was going to be blamed too,” Clara said.
Adrian nodded. “After she served her purpose.”
Vanessa asked to speak with him from county detention.
Adrian nearly refused.
Clara said, “Go.”
“Why?”
“Because truth is slower.”
He recognized Natalie’s words.
In the interview room, Vanessa looked twenty years older.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” she said.
“You won’t get it.”
“I loved you.”
“No. You loved being safe near me.”
She flinched.
“Maybe at first.”
“Why push the stroller?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Graham told me Clara had copied Natalie’s old files. He said if Clara stayed, everything would come out. He wanted an incident big enough to remove her and make you look violent.”
“And you used Emma.”
“I thought Clara would catch her.”
“You did not know that.”
“No.”
“Did you help kill Natalie?”
Vanessa shook her head violently. “No. I watched them prepare the car. I was a coward. I didn’t stop it.”
“You could have warned her.”
“I tried. Graham took my phone. Mason stood at the door.”
Adrian looked away.
Vanessa whispered, “There’s something you still don’t know about Mason.”
“What?”
“He wasn’t working for Graham first.”
Adrian turned back.
“Then who?”
May you like
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your father.”
