Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS ALREADY THERE

Adrian returned to the Vale estate at 8:15 that morning with police, two forensic accountants, and a locksmith who had worked for him for twelve years.

Vanessa was still at the hospital under a temporary protective order that barred her from Emma.

Mason was missing.

Graham was not answering calls.

The nursery looked exactly as Adrian remembered it.

White shelves. Pale green walls. A mobile of small silver stars.

Then the locksmith removed the built-in cabinet.

Behind it was a narrow opening in the drywall.

Inside sat an old network switch, a portable drive, and a black metal box.

Olivia stared. “That was behind Emma’s crib?”

Adrian’s anger became physical.

Clara put a hand on Olivia’s shoulder.

“Let the police open it.”

Inside the metal box were copies of passports, blank prescription pads, prepaid phones, and a stack of unsigned guardianship documents.

The names on the documents were Adrian Vale and Vanessa Vale.

The children listed were Olivia and Emma.

The forms would allow Vanessa to take temporary control of both girls’ medical and financial decisions if Adrian were deemed unavailable.

“What makes me unavailable?” Adrian asked.

The detective read the clause.

“Death, incapacity, detention, or credible investigation for domestic violence.”

Nobody spoke.

Adrian thought of Clara’s cheek.

Vanessa had warned him that his slap could be used against him.

It had not been a random threat.

It was part of the architecture.

Clara looked at the papers. “She wanted you to lose control.”

Olivia’s face went pale. “She wanted Dad to hit someone.”

Adrian felt the room tilt.

Had Vanessa known exactly how terrified he would be when he saw the stroller?

Had she counted on rage?

The detective pulled another folder from the box.

Inside were photographs of Adrian arguing with employees, paparazzi shots, old tabloid stories, and notes describing his temper after Natalie’s death.

A profile.

A plan.

Then the detective found a sealed envelope.

On the front, in Natalie’s handwriting, were two words.

FOR ADRIAN.

He opened it with shaking fingers.

Inside was a single page.

GRAHAM IS STEALING FROM THE FOUNDATION. I THINK MASON IS HELPING HIM. VANESSA KNOWS MORE THAN SHE ADMITS. IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, DO NOT LET THEM CALL IT AN ACCIDENT.

Adrian read the final line again.

Natalie’s death had been ruled an accident.

A wet road.

Brake failure.

No other vehicle involved.

The detective looked at him.

“Mr. Vale, we need the original crash file.”

Adrian nodded.

Olivia was staring at something beneath the letter.

A photograph.

Natalie stood outside the foundation office.

Beside her was Vanessa.

And Vanessa was holding Mason’s hand.
