Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY CRIB

The hospital security video showed a man in blue scrubs pushing Emma’s bassinet through a service corridor.

He wore a surgical mask and cap.

At first, Adrian did not recognize him.

Clara did.

“Dr. Harlan.”

The bassinet disappeared into a restricted elevator leading to the loading dock.

A second camera showed Graham Holt waiting beside a gray medical van.

Adrian punched the wall hard enough to split his knuckles.

Clara grabbed his wrist.

“Stop.”

“They took my baby.”

“And breaking your hand won’t bring her back.”

The detective received a call from highway patrol.

The van had been spotted heading west.

Toward the Vale Foundation’s old rehabilitation center, a building closed for renovation six months earlier.

Adrian knew the place.

Natalie had opened it eight years ago.

It had private treatment rooms, a loading dock, and an underground garage.

“Why there?” Clara asked.

“Because half the cameras are offline.”

“And because Graham knows it.”

They drove with police units staggered behind them.

Halfway there, Vanessa called.

Adrian answered.

“Where are my daughters?”

“Olivia is with me.”

“And Emma?”

“Graham has her.”

“Put Olivia on.”

A pause.

Then his daughter’s voice. “Dad, I’m okay.”

“Get away from Vanessa.”

“No. Listen. She’s taking me to the rehab center too.”

Adrian clenched the phone.

Vanessa returned.

“Graham thinks I’m bringing Olivia because he wants both girls together.”

“Why?”

“So he can make them disappear.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Adrian’s voice became deadly calm. “If you’re lying—”

“I know.”

“You pushed Emma.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I know.”

“You drugged her.”

“No.”

“Don’t lie to me now.”

“I gave her the bottle twice because Graham threatened Olivia. I stopped after Clara started asking questions.”

Clara leaned toward the phone. “Then you framed me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Graham said if Adrian trusted you, he’d never get guardianship.”

Clara’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa whispered, “I thought I could control the stroller. I thought you’d catch it.”

Adrian nearly lost his voice.

“You gambled with my child’s life.”

“I know.”

Then Vanessa said, “There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“Graham didn’t choose the rehab center because cameras are down.”

May you like

“Then why?”

“Because Natalie hid the original foundation ledger there.”
