Chapter 11 - The Doctor's Bag
Police found Dr. Lang in the service garage.
He was carrying a medical bag filled with Leo's old prescriptions, sealed blood samples, and Ethan's private lab records.
He surrendered immediately.
"I didn't hurt the child."
Detective Chen said, "Then start talking."
Lang looked at Ethan.
"Collins paid me."
"For what?"
"To exaggerate your symptoms."
"What symptoms?"
"Dehydration. Sleep deprivation. Stress."
"And the night I was hospitalized?"
Lang swallowed.
"I gave you a sedative."
Ethan's hands clenched.
"Without telling me."
"Yes."
Sarah looked at Leo.
"Did you give Leo anything?"
"No."
"Did Victoria?"
Lang hesitated.
That was enough.
"What did she ask for?" Sarah said.
"A list of medications that could make a toddler drowsy."
Ethan moved forward.
Chen blocked him.
Lang raised his hands.
"I refused."
"Then why steal his medicine?"
"Because Daniel threatened to expose me. I panicked."
"Where is Daniel?"
"I don't know."
Sarah saw fear in Lang's eyes.
Not of prison.
Of Daniel.
Then Maria brought something from the nursery.
A small notebook hidden behind Leo's changing table.
Sarah recognized the handwriting.
Caroline's.
Ethan sat down.
The first pages tracked Leo's feeding and sleep.
The later pages tracked people.
Collins - entered nursery at 1:12 a.m.
Victoria - asked about trust terms.
Lang - changed Ethan's prescription without discussion.
David Voss - no agency confirmation.
Caroline had been investigating them before she died.
Near the back was a page underlined twice:
IF THEY COME AFTER ETHAN, SARAH MUST TAKE LEO TO HAWTHORNE.
Sarah looked up.
"Hawthorne?"
Ethan's face changed.
"Hawthorne Cottage."
"Where is that?"
"My mother's old property. Nobody uses it."
Nathan flipped the page.
A map was taped beneath it.
At the cottage, under a loose floorboard, they found a metal case.
Inside were original corporate safety reports.
And a letter addressed to Victoria Vale.
Ethan opened it.
Victoria,
If you ever learn the truth about your father, understand that Ethan did not cause it. Collins did. My family covered it, and for that I am sorry.
Do not make my son pay for his grandfather's cowardice.
Caroline.
Sarah whispered, "She was trying to save Victoria too."
Then a car engine started outside.
Detective Chen ran to the window.
Daniel Vale was standing beside the police vehicle.
He held up both hands.
"I came to surrender."
