Chapter 20 - The Light Stays On
A year after the day of the iron, Leo turned two.
The mansion lawn filled with children, balloons, and badly frosted cupcakes.
Sarah arrived late from class wearing scrubs.
Leo spotted her from across the garden.
"SA!"
He ran.
She caught him and laughed.
"You got fast."
Ethan walked over carrying two paper plates.
"He practices escaping."
"Good skill in this family."
He laughed.
Daniel sent letters from the facility where he was serving part of his sentence and completing court-ordered treatment.
Victoria sent one letter.
Ethan returned it unopened.
Mercer Industries published the original Robert Vale safety report and created an independent worker-safety fund.
Robert's name was cleared publicly.
Caroline's protected trust remained untouched.
Leo's main trust moved under independent professional control.
Near sunset, Leo became tired and cranky.
Ethan carried him upstairs.
Sarah followed to say goodnight.
The nursery was different now.
No hidden devices.
No locked drawers.
The old iron had been removed months ago.
Above the fireplace, the baby monitor showed one small green light.
Leo pointed.
"Light."
"Yep," Ethan said.
"On."
Sarah tucked the blanket around him.
"The light stays on."
Leo closed his eyes.
Ethan stood beside the crib.
Sarah picked up her bag.
"I have class early."
"I'll walk you out."
At the doorway, Leo murmured in his sleep.
"Sa... Dad..."
They both turned.
Ethan smiled.
Sarah's eyes softened.
Downstairs, the mansion was quiet.
Not the old quiet that hid secrets.
A different kind.
The ordinary quiet of a child sleeping safely.
At the front door, Ethan looked back once.
The green light above the fireplace was still glowing.
Recording nothing dramatic.
Proving nothing.
