Chapter 8 - The Man in the Nursery

Police raced upstairs.

The nursery was empty.

The window stood open.

On the crib lay Caroline's envelope.

Inside was not a letter.

It was a bank token.

Nathan recognized it immediately.

"Offshore trust access."

Ethan stared. "Whose trust?"

Nathan entered the serial number into a secure database.

A dormant account appeared.

CAROLINE MERCER PROTECTIVE TRUST.

Beneficiary: Leo Mercer.

Balance: $42.6 million.

Victoria swore.

Ethan looked at her.

"You didn't know."

She said nothing.

Nathan explained. "Caroline created this outside the main family trust. It activates if Leo's primary trust is challenged."

Sarah understood.

"A backup."

"A firewall," Nathan said.

Ethan looked at Victoria. "So even if you took the big trust, Leo still had money you couldn't touch."

Victoria's face hardened.

"Caroline always thought she was smarter than everyone."

"She was smarter than you."

That hit.

Then Nathan opened a document attached to the account.

It named a secondary protector.

Sarah Bennett.

Sarah nearly dropped the paper.

"Me?"

Ethan looked just as shocked.

Nathan nodded.

"Caroline trusted you."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"The maid."

Sarah looked at her.

"No. The person who stayed."

Silence.

Ethan's phone buzzed.

Daniel Vale sent a video.

Collins sat tied to a chair in what looked like an empty maintenance room.

He was alive.

Terrified.

Daniel's voice came from behind the camera.

"Your chief of staff got nervous."

Collins shouted, "Ethan, don't listen to him!"

Daniel continued.

"He wants immunity. I want the bank token."

Ethan looked toward the envelope.

"Why?"

"Because Caroline's trust has something besides money."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

Daniel laughed.

"Ask your lawyer to open the restricted evidence folder."

Nathan typed.

A password prompt appeared.

One hint:

LEO'S FIRST WORD.

Ethan whispered, "Mama."

The folder opened.

Inside were scanned safety reports from the accident that killed Robert Vale.

And a video statement from Ethan's father.

Ethan pressed play.

His father appeared old and exhausted.

"Robert Vale did not cause the accident. I signed a report I knew was incomplete."

Victoria's face went still.

The dead patriarch continued.

"But the executive who ordered the safety bypass was not me."

A name appeared on screen.

COLLINS, HENRY.

Sarah looked toward the phone video.

The missing chief of staff.

Victoria whispered, "No."

Her entire revenge had been aimed at the wrong Mercer.

And the man who helped her enter the house had been protecting his own crime.
