Chapter 18 - St. Arden

Police searched St. Arden before dawn.

The building looked like a children's clinic.

Bright walls.

Tiny chairs.

Animal murals.

Behind a locked service corridor were private rooms with no exterior windows.

Records showed no patients.

But one room had already been prepared.

Name on the file:

LEO MERCER.

Sarah could not speak when she saw it.

Ethan tore the paper from the door.

Inside were copies of the false capacity report.

A guardianship petition.

A schedule for supervised parental visits.

Two hours a week.

Ethan stared at the page.

"They were going to make me ask permission to see my own son."

Nathan said quietly, "If the court believed the evidence, yes."

Detective Chen found financial records connecting St. Arden to Margaret and Collins.

The conspiracy was complete.

Victoria had been promised control of Leo's trust.

Margaret would protect the foundation.

Collins would bury the old Vale evidence forever.

Daniel had complicated everything by seeking the truth.

Sarah had complicated it by refusing to look away.

And Caroline had complicated it before all of them by leaving evidence everywhere.

Collins was convicted on conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping-related charges, obstruction, and offenses tied to Caroline's medical records.

Margaret was convicted on fraud, conspiracy, and kidnapping-related charges.

Dr. Lang lost his license and received a sentence under his cooperation agreement.

Daniel faced consequences too, but his testimony and evidence mattered.

Months later, Sarah stood in the nursery on her last scheduled day.

Her uniform was folded in a bag.

Leo was asleep.

Ethan leaned in the doorway.

"So this is really it?"

"I told you I was leaving."

"You also told me you'd stay until we hired someone Leo trusts."

Sarah smiled.

"You did."

The new caregiver, Nina, had spent six weeks training beside her.

Ethan nodded.

Then Leo woke.

He saw Sarah's bag.

His face crumpled.

"No Sa."

Sarah's heart broke.

She lifted him.

"I'm not disappearing, buddy."

Ethan looked away.

Then Leo reached toward both of them and said his clearest word yet.

"Home."

May you like

Sarah froze.

Because after everything that house had been, Leo still believed it could become one.
