Chapter 17 - Ethan's Mother

Evelyn Mercer had lived in Switzerland for most of the year.
She returned the next morning voluntarily.
Ethan met her in the library.
"Why were you in Leo's nursery?"
Evelyn looked at the hidden-clock footage.
"Because Caroline called me."
Ethan stared.
"You spoke to her that night?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"She made me promise."
He laughed bitterly.
"Everyone made promises except to me."
Evelyn accepted that.
"Caroline believed Collins had access to the hospital. She wanted Leo moved."
"Did you move him?"
"No. By the time I reached the house, Sarah was with him."
Sarah remembered that night.
A quiet older woman standing in the hallway.
She had assumed Evelyn came from the hospital.
Evelyn continued.
"I took copies of Caroline's documents."
"Where are they?"
"In Zurich."
Nathan nearly laughed with relief.
A complete backup outside the country.
Margaret had burned nothing that mattered.
Ethan sat down.
"Why stay silent?"
"Your father helped cover Robert Vale's accident. I was ashamed."
"And silence fixed that?"
"No."
Evelyn's answer was immediate.
"No. It made everything worse."
Sarah watched Ethan absorb a lesson he had heard too many times.
Silence protected the wrong people.
Evelyn turned to Sarah.
"Caroline trusted you."
Sarah nodded.
"She trusted a lot of people who failed her too."
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"Yes."
Then Detective Chen entered with news.
Daniel had not run.
He had gone to retrieve something Collins hid before his arrest.
A storage locker.
Inside were burner phones, forged IDs, and contracts.
One contract named Victoria as future co-guardian.
Another named Margaret as trust supervisor.
And a third was unsigned.
It proposed transferring Leo to a private residential pediatric facility if Ethan were declared incompetent.
Sarah stared.
"They were going to take him out of the house."
Nathan nodded.
"Legally, if they could."
Ethan's face went white.
The facility name was familiar.
St. Arden Pediatric Center.
Evelyn whispered, "That place closed ten years ago."
Chen shook her head.
"It reopened privately."
"Who owns it?"
Chen handed Ethan the corporate record.
A holding company.
Final beneficial owner:
Henry Collins.
Then Sarah noticed the facility's address.
It was three blocks from the abandoned Mercer lab where Collins had been found.

The plan had never been just about money.
They had built a place to hide Leo.
