Chapter 19 - Caroline's Last Recording

Before Sarah left, Evelyn returned from Zurich with Caroline's backup files.
Among them was one final video.
Ethan, Sarah, Evelyn, and Nathan watched together.
Caroline sat in the nursery floor chair.
Leo was asleep against her chest.
"If this is the last recording anyone finds, I want it to be less useful than the others."
She smiled.
"No account numbers. No names. No evidence."
Ethan laughed through tears.
Caroline continued.
"Just this.
Ethan, money makes people think protection means control. It doesn't.
Leo will need people who tell him the truth.
Sarah does that.
Your mother sometimes does, when she's brave enough.
Nathan does it when billing by the hour."
Nathan actually laughed.
Caroline looked down at Leo.
"And if Victoria ever comes near this family, do not assume anger makes her evil. But do not assume pain makes her safe either."
Sarah felt chills.
Caroline had understood Victoria before any of them.
Then Caroline looked back at the camera.
"If I don't get to watch Leo grow up, tell him I loved him before he had a name."
Ethan covered his face.
The video ended.
No cliffhanger.
No hidden villain.
Just grief.
Three months later, Sarah began nursing school again.
She had left years earlier when her mother became sick.
Ethan quietly offered to pay.
Sarah refused.
Then he created a scholarship at the hospital for household workers returning to healthcare training.
She accepted only after learning it was open to everyone.
"Still stubborn," he told her.
"Still rich," she answered.
Leo visited Sarah every Saturday with Nina or Ethan.
One evening, Ethan found a small green light glowing above the fireplace.
For a second, his chest tightened.
Then he saw Leo on the monitor.
Safe.
Laughing.
Throwing blocks at Nina.
Ethan smiled.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Sarah.
CHECK LEO'S BLUE STORYBOOK.
Ethan frowned.
Inside the book was a folded note.
Caroline's handwriting.
He had somehow missed one last page.
It contained only four words:
TRUST WHO PROTECTS HIM.
May you like
Ethan looked toward the monitor.
And this time, he knew exactly who she meant.
