Chapter 13 - The Hearing
The next morning, Linda appeared before a judge on the violation of the no-contact order while detectives worked to verify Calvin's video.
Mark sat behind the prosecutor with Sarah and June. Noah stayed with Ms. Greene in a private room away from the courtroom.
Linda entered wearing a navy suit and no handcuffs.
She looked composed.
That was always her gift.
Her new attorney argued that she had returned to retrieve medication and personal documents from a home she partly owned. The prosecutor answered with photographs of the broken window and Sarah's recording.
Then Linda's attorney turned toward Mark.
"Mr. Carter has admitted leaving his child with my client while traveling extensively. He now seeks to place all responsibility on his mother to protect himself."
Mark felt Sarah tense beside him.
He whispered, "Let him talk."
The judge extended the protective order and ordered Linda to remain away from Noah, June, Mark, and Sarah.
Outside court, reporters had already gathered.
Someone had leaked the story.
"Mrs. Carter! Did you imprison your mother?"
"Did you abuse your grandson?"
Linda stopped on the courthouse steps.
For one dangerous second, Mark thought she might answer.
Instead she looked directly at the cameras.
"I have spent my life protecting my family from people who exploit weakness. I look forward to the truth coming out."
Then she looked at Mark.
He knew that look.
It meant punishment later.
Across town, Ruiz and Dr. Franklin searched a locked archive cabinet in the school records room using a warrant.
Behind old attendance binders, they found a false back panel.
Inside sat a blue ledger.
And beside it, a sealed envelope addressed to Mark.
The ledger contained years of payments from June's accounts to Calvin Shaw.
The envelope contained one handwritten page from Daniel.
Mark read it in the courthouse hallway.
LINDA KNOWS THE SCHOOL IS THE ONLY PLACE SHE NEVER SEARCHES BECAUSE SHE HATES BEING REMINDED THAT SARAH TOLD A TEACHER FIRST.
At the bottom was one more line.
IF YOU FIND THIS, ASK MS. GREENE'S MOTHER WHAT SHE SAW IN 1998.
Mark looked up at Noah's teacher.
"Your mother knew my family?"

"She was Sarah's teacher."
