Chapter 7 - The First Lie

Mark turned to Noah so quickly the chair legs scraped the floor.

"You know Sarah?"

Noah looked terrified.

"I found her online."

"When?"

"Last year."

Mark opened his mouth, then stopped.

He had promised to listen.

So he listened.

Noah explained that a family genealogy project at school had made him search the Carter name. He found an old local article about Sarah winning a scholarship. Then a photography website. Then a contact form.

"I asked if she was my aunt."

Sarah's voice came through the phone. "I thought it was Linda trying to bait me."

"Why didn't you call me?" Mark asked.

"I did. Twice. Linda answered your office line the first time. The second time Calvin Shaw called me back and told me if I contacted your family again, they'd seek a restraining order."

June muttered, "That snake."

Sarah continued. "Then Noah emailed again. He didn't tell me everything at first. Just that his mom scared him."

"Why didn't you call the police?" Mark asked.

"I did call child services in your county. Anonymous report. They said they needed more. Noah begged me not to use his name. He thought Linda would punish him."

Noah stared at his shoes.

"She did anyway."

Mark felt sick.

Sarah's voice softened. "Noah, you did the right thing."

He nodded even though she couldn't see him.

Officer Ruiz returned with news: Linda would likely be booked, but the initial charging decision would take time. Calvin Shaw had already arrived at the station as her attorney.

"Of course he has," June said.

Mark asked Sarah, "Can you come here?"

She didn't answer immediately.

"I swore I'd never walk into that house again."

"I understand."

"No, you don't."

He took the hit.

"You're right. I don't. But Noah needs people who believe him. June needs help. And I need to hear the truth from someone my mother spent twenty years teaching me not to trust."

Sarah exhaled.

"I'll take the morning flight."

Before they ended the call, she said, "Mark, one more thing."

"What?"

"Dad didn't die thinking Mom was just abusive."

Mark looked at June.

June went rigid.

Sarah's voice dropped.

"He thought she was stealing from Grandma. He also thought Calvin was helping her."

"We found documents."

"Then find the blue ledger."

"What blue ledger?"

"Dad said it was the one thing Linda would destroy if she ever found it."

A crash came from inside locker 214.

Everyone turned.

The back metal wall of the unit trembled.

Then they heard footsteps running away on the other side.

Someone had been listening.
