Chapter 17 - The Confession
Police found Raymond Ellis at a hunting cabin before sunrise.
Rebecca was there too.
Alive.
She had been locked in a back room after Raymond forced her into his truck outside a grocery store. She told investigators he had demanded the location of every copy she had made.
The garage fire, he admitted, had been meant to destroy documents he believed Mark stored there.
Raymond's confession broke the family story wide open.
Linda had used him for years: errands, intimidation, threats. He called it loyalty until detectives called it conspiracy.
June listened to the news from her hospital room, where doctors were treating dehydration and neglect.
"My children learned fear from me," she said quietly.
Mark frowned. "This isn't your fault."
"I didn't say it was. I said I see where it began. Their father ruled our house with anger. I survived by staying quiet. Linda learned that control keeps you safe. Raymond learned that obeying the strongest person keeps you safe."
She looked at Noah.
"And now we stop teaching it."
Noah held her hand.
Later, Linda requested a meeting with Mark through her attorney.
He almost refused.
Dr. Keller asked one question: "Would the meeting help you set a boundary, or are you hoping she'll finally become the mother you needed?"
Mark knew the answer.
He went only to set the boundary.
Linda sat behind thick glass in the county jail.
"You look tired," she said through the phone.
"You don't get to mother me anymore."
Her smile disappeared.
"Calvin is lying to save himself."
"The recordings aren't lying."
"Your father was going to destroy this family."
"He was trying to expose you."
Linda leaned closer.
"Everything I did was to keep what was ours."
"Noah is not yours. June is not yours. I am not yours."
For once, Linda had no answer.
Mark stood.
She slapped her palm against the glass.
"If you walk away from me now, don't ever come back!"
Mark looked at her.
"That's the first thing you've asked me to do that I can promise."
He hung up.

As he reached the door, Linda shouted one final sentence through the glass.
"Ask Sarah why Dad really sent her away!"
