Chapter 6 - The Tape

The tape hissed.

Mark could hear his own pulse louder than the machine.

Daniel Carter rubbed both hands over his face on the screen.

"Sarah came to me when she was seventeen. She said Linda had been hitting her for years. I didn't believe her. Not at first."

Mark shut his eyes.

The words felt like they were aimed directly at him.

Daniel continued.

"Linda always had an explanation. Sarah was difficult. Sarah lied. Sarah wanted attention. I believed the adult who sounded calm instead of the kid who sounded angry. That was my failure."

Noah looked at his father.

Mark could not meet his eyes.

"Eventually I saw it myself," Daniel said. "I came home early. Linda had Sarah cornered in the laundry room. After that, Sarah left. I helped her. Linda never forgave me."

The picture rolled again.

"I tried to contact Mark, but Linda controlled the calls. She told him Sarah hated him. That wasn't true. Sarah asked about him every month."

Mark whispered, "Oh, God."

June put a hand on his shoulder.

Onscreen, Daniel held up a folder.

"I copied everything. Photos of injuries. School reports. Notes from counselors. I gave one copy to June. Another is with an attorney who is not Calvin Shaw. If anything happens to me, find Sarah. She knows the rest."

The tape ended in static.

Mark sat motionless.

Noah finally said, "Dad, did Grandma do that to you too?"

He wanted to say no.

Instead, fragments returned: a belt laid on the kitchen counter as a warning, Linda gripping his chin, days when nobody spoke to him because he had embarrassed her at church.

"Sometimes," Mark said.

Noah's expression hurt more than pity would have.

"Then why did you leave me with her?"

Mark's voice broke. "Because I convinced myself she had changed."

"Why?"

"Because I needed it to be true."

Ruiz quietly stepped away to give them space.

June opened another folder from the locker.

Inside was an old address in Portland, Oregon, crossed out twice. Beneath it, in Daniel's handwriting, was a phone number and a note:

SARAH - SAFE CONTACT. DO NOT GIVE LINDA.

Mark dialed.

The number rang four times.

A woman answered. "Hello?"

Mark couldn't speak.

"Hello?"

"Sarah?"

Silence.

Then a sharp inhale.

"Who is this?"

"It's Mark."

Another silence, longer this time.

When Sarah spoke again, her voice shook.

"Did Mom finally hurt Noah badly enough for you to believe me?"

Mark stared at his son.

"How do you know about Noah?"

May you like

Sarah answered with four words.

"Because he's been emailing me."
