"Mom said Dad sent you away for another reason."

Sarah stared at him across the kitchen table.

"Of course she did."

"I don't believe her. But I want to hear it from you."

Sarah nodded.

"Dad helped me leave because I was pregnant."

Mark blinked.

"What?"

"I was seventeen. The father was another student. Mom found out and told me I had shamed the family. Dad got me to Aunt Carol in Oregon before she could force me to come home."

"What happened to the baby?"

Sarah's eyes softened.

"I chose adoption. It was my choice, not hers. Dad made sure of that."

Mark reached across the table.

"I'm sorry I believed everything she said about you."

"Then don't waste another twenty years being sorry. Be different."

That became Mark's rule.

He sold his share of the house after the court froze Linda's interest. He took a job that required no travel for a year. He went to counseling with Noah, not because Noah was broken, but because both of them had things to rebuild.

At the preliminary hearing, Noah was not forced to face Linda in open court. His recorded forensic interview and corroborating evidence were enough for the judge to find probable cause on multiple charges.

Outside the courthouse, Noah looked up at Mark.

"Is it over?"

Mark considered lying to make him feel better.

Then he remembered the new rule.
