Chapter 15 - The Witness

Police found Linda before midnight at a private airfield forty miles away.
She was not alone.
Calvin Shaw was in the passenger seat of her rented SUV.
Both were arrested.
By morning, Calvin wanted a deal.
His attorney offered records, passwords, financial accounts, and testimony about Daniel's crash in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.
Mark hated the idea of Calvin bargaining.
Sarah understood it differently.
"Use the coward," she said. "Then let the court decide what he deserves."
Calvin's statement lasted four hours.
He admitted helping Linda forge June's signature, intercept school reports, and hide Sarah's abuse complaint. He also admitted following Daniel's car on the night of the crash to frighten him into dropping an audit of June's finances.
"I never meant for him to crash," Calvin said on the recorded interview. "Linda told me to make him scared enough to stop digging."
Mark watched through one-way glass.
"Did she know you were following him?" the detective asked.
"Yes."
"Did she tell you to force him off the road?"
Calvin looked down.
"She said, 'Make him choose between the truth and getting home alive.'"
Mark walked out before he heard another word.
In the hallway, Noah sat with Sarah and a therapist named Dr. Keller.
Noah stood when he saw his father.
"Was it bad?"
Mark knelt.
"Yeah."
"Did Grandma kill Grandpa?"
Mark chose every word carefully.
"She helped create the danger that killed him. The police and the court will decide exactly what that means."
Noah nodded.
"Are you mad?"
"Very."
"Are you going to hit something?"
Mark's heart broke.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because being angry doesn't give me permission to scare you."
Noah leaned into him.
That afternoon, detectives received one more witness.
Calvin's former assistant, Rebecca Lane, arrived carrying copies of emails she had saved for years.
"I knew something was wrong," she said. "I was afraid to lose my job."
One email concerned Noah.
Linda had written Calvin only six months earlier:
IF THE BOY TALKS, MARK WILL TURN ON ME. I NEED SOMETHING THAT MAKES HIM LOOK UNRELIABLE FIRST.
Attached was a draft letter to Noah's pediatrician describing him as aggressive, dishonest, and emotionally unstable.
Mark read it twice.

Linda had not only hurt Noah.
She had been preparing to make sure nobody believed him.
