Chapter 5 - The Storage Key

Mark put the call on speaker.

"What mistake?"

Calvin Shaw's voice stayed smooth. "Turning a private family matter into a criminal circus."

June's hand tightened around her coffee cup.

"Tell him I want my money back," she said.

A pause.

"Mrs. Ellis is there?"

"You knew where she was," Mark said.

"I knew Linda was caring for her mother at home. That's perfectly legal."

"Locked in a basement?"

"I can't comment on facts I haven't verified."

Mark almost smiled. "You seem to know enough to call me at seven in the morning."

Shaw's tone cooled. "Your mother is frightened. She believes you're being manipulated."

"By my twelve-year-old son?"

"By emotion."

June leaned toward the phone.

"Calvin, if you touch that storage locker, I'll make sure the bar association hears every word you ever said to me."

The line went silent.

Then Shaw said, "June, you should be careful making accusations at your age."

Mark ended the call.

"We're going now."

Officer Ruiz met them at Westfield Storage forty minutes later. Because the key might lead to evidence, she documented the locker before Mark opened it.

Unit 214 smelled of dust and cardboard.

Inside were three metal filing cabinets, a cedar chest, two taped boxes, and an old television with a VCR built into it.

"Who keeps a VCR?" Noah asked.

June answered from the doorway. "A man who didn't trust computers."

Mark opened the cedar chest.

Inside were family photographs, school papers, and a stack of VHS tapes labeled in his father's handwriting.

MARK - AGE 8.

SARAH - AGE 11.

LINDA - DO NOT ERASE.

Noah pointed. "Who's Sarah?"

Mark's throat tightened.

"My sister."

"I have an aunt?"

Mark looked away.

Sarah had left home at eighteen and cut contact after a fight no one ever explained. Linda always said Sarah was unstable, selfish, cruel.

Mark had believed her.

June opened a filing cabinet.

"Here."

Folders held copies of checks made out to Calvin Shaw, property transfers, and letters June had written but apparently never mailed.

Then Ruiz found a sealed envelope taped beneath the bottom drawer.

On the front, in Daniel Carter's handwriting, were six words:

IF LINDA SAYS I LIED, PLAY THIS.

They carried the old VCR into the facility office.

The tape flickered, rolled, then steadied.

Daniel appeared on the screen, eleven years younger, exhausted and afraid.

Mark stopped breathing.

His father looked straight into the camera.

"Mark, if you're watching this, your mother has probably convinced you I'm the villain."

The image jumped.

Daniel continued.

"I need you to know what happened to Sarah."

Mark reached for the table.

Noah whispered, "Dad?"

May you like

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

"Your sister didn't run away from us. She ran away from Linda."
