Chapter 1 - The Bruises Under Her Sleeve

"You hurt me every day!"

My six-year-old daughter's scream stopped me cold in the hallway of my own house.

I was supposed to be in New York until Friday. A canceled meeting put me on an early flight home, and I told no one.

Vanessa stood by the kitchen island while Sophie backed against the pantry door, sobbing.

"Sophie," Vanessa said softly, "stop making up stories."

"She isn't making anything up," I said.

Vanessa spun around. "Ethan? You're home?"

Sophie ran to me. She didn't hug me. She hid behind me.

I knelt. "Sweetheart, look at me. What happened?"

"Nothing," Vanessa answered.

I looked up. "I asked my daughter."

Sophie pulled at my jacket. Her sleeve slid back.

Finger-shaped bruises circled her arm.

Vanessa took one step forward. "She bruises easily. You know that."

"Don't."

My voice stopped her.

For weeks, I had watched Sophie change. She went quiet when Vanessa entered a room. She stopped asking me to bring her gifts from business trips. She started locking her bedroom door. Every time I asked why, Vanessa had an explanation: grief, school, nightmares, attention-seeking.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears on command. "Ethan, she's been struggling since Claire died. I have tried everything."

Sophie looked up at me.

"Mommy didn't die."

Vanessa's tears stopped.

"What did you say?"

She pointed at Vanessa. "She told me Mommy is alive."

Vanessa went pale.

I reached into my coat and set an old photograph on the island. On the back was a handwritten address in Ventura.

"I already knew about the bruises," I said. "Mrs. Alvarez sent me pictures yesterday. That's why I hired someone."

Vanessa's lips parted.

"My investigator found Claire alive."

A crystal tumbler slipped from Vanessa's fingers and shattered across the floor.

Sophie squeezed my hand until her nails hurt.

Then she whispered, "Daddy, Mommy comes here when you're gone."

"What?"

Sophie leaned closer, terrified Vanessa might hear even though she stood ten feet away.

"She says not to tell you," Sophie whispered. "Because somebody in this house tried to kill her."

And then the lights went out.
