Chapter 6 - Blood That Didn't Belong to Her

Sheriff's deputies arrived before anyone could move again.
Claire surrendered the gun. Vanessa and Martin were detained, but Martin kept repeating that he had committed no crime and that we were all witnessing "a dangerous family delusion."
At the station, Claire and I sat in separate interview rooms for two hours.
When they finally let us speak, Sophie was asleep against my chest.
Claire stood in the doorway.
"Can I hold her?"
Then Sophie opened her eyes and reached for her mother.
Claire sat across from me with our daughter between us.
"Whose blood was in the car?" I asked.
She looked at Sophie.
"Not here."
"Then where?"
"The night of the crash, a man attacked me in the garage at the foundation."
"Who?"
"I didn't know his name then."
She slid a photograph across Lucas's desk.
A heavyset man with a shaved head stepped out of a truck.
"Ray Mercer," Lucas said. "Former private security. Assault charge in Nevada."
Claire nodded. "He tried to force me into my car. I hit him with a tire iron. There was blood everywhere. I ran. He followed me up Pacific Coast Highway. My brakes failed near Point Dume. I jumped before the car went through the barrier."
"You jumped out of a moving car?"
"I don't remember landing. A retired nurse found me below the road and kept me alive until I could walk."
Lucas leaned forward. "Why no hospital?"
"Because I was confused and terrified. Then I saw the news and the forged emails."
"Where is Mercer now?"
Claire looked at me.
"That's the problem. He disappeared the same night."
Lucas opened his laptop.
"Not exactly."
Lucas traced Mercer's payment to a shell account.
The authorized signer was Martin Vale.
Then Lucas scrolled down.
There were two authorized signers.
Martin Vale.
And Ethan Cole.
My name.
My signature.
Claire watched my face.
"That's why I believed you were involved."
"It's forged."
"I believe you now."
"Why?"
She pulled out her phone.
"Because three weeks ago, I saw the person who forged it."
A video showed Vanessa sitting in a parked car, passing a folder to someone through the window.
The camera angle shifted.
The second person turned toward the lens.
I recognized him immediately.
