Chapter 10 - The Lie Inside Our Marriage

We got Vanessa to the hospital under police guard.

The bullet passed through her shoulder. She would live.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with that information.

Claire sat across from me in the waiting room, staring at the floor.

"Tell me," I said.

She looked up.

"Ethan—"

"Don't protect me from another truth. I'm done with that."

Her eyes filled.

"You are Sophie's father."

I exhaled.

Then anger replaced relief. "So what was Vanessa talking about?"

"When I was nineteen, I was assaulted by someone at St. Catherine's. I became pregnant. I lost the baby."

I went still.

Claire had told me she had suffered a miscarriage in college. She had never told me why.

"The man was a staff member," she continued. "My therapist recorded me naming him. Evelyn Hale told my parents the accusation was a symptom of my breakdown. The recording disappeared."

"Who was the man?"

Claire's voice barely moved.

"Martin Vale."

"He assaulted you?"

Claire nodded.

"And your family kept him?"

"They believed the doctor. They believed him. They thought I was sick."

"I'll kill him."

Claire grabbed my wrist.

"No. That's what they want."

She was right.

A violent outburst from me would fit perfectly into the court petition.

More important, he had found the archived St. Catherine's storage facility.

"If the original recording still exists," he said, "it's there."

Claire shook her head. "Evelyn would've destroyed it."

"Maybe. But old institutions keep everything when insurance companies are involved."

We left before dawn.

We reached the old St. Catherine's archive before dawn.

Rows of boxes disappeared into darkness.

We found Claire's name after forty minutes.

The box was empty.

Except for one cassette tape.

On the label, in Claire's handwriting, were four words:

IF I DIE, PLAY THIS.

We found an old recorder in the office.

Claire pressed play.

Her nineteen-year-old voice filled the room.

Then another voice spoke.

Not Martin's.

Evelyn Hale's.

"If you tell anyone what Martin did," she said calmly, "your parents will lose custody of you, and I will make sure no one ever believes another word you say."

Then the tape clicked.

A man's voice entered the room behind us.

May you like

"That tape belongs to me."

Martin stood in the doorway with a gun.
