Chapter 18 - The Original Target

Mercer's death looked like suicide.
Lucas didn't believe it.
Neither did I.
A key in Mercer's boot opened a storage unit containing a folder marked COLE.
Inside were surveillance photographs of me taken more than two years before Claire's crash.
Pictures of me driving. Running. Picking Sophie up from preschool. Drinking coffee on the office balcony.
A schedule tracked my travel and medication.
At the back was a typed plan for a staged freeway accident.
Target: Ethan Cole.
Claire read the page from her hospital bed.
"They were going to kill you first."
Lucas nodded. "Then something changed."
Three days later, Claire had discovered missing money at the foundation.
She had become the urgent problem.
"Why me?" I asked.
Lucas placed another document beside the first.
My original corporate bylaws contained a succession clause I had forgotten existed. If I died while Sophie was a minor, my voting shares transferred into the same family trust Martin controlled.
Claire's discovery had interrupted their first plan.
So they switched targets.
My wife almost died because she stumbled into a murder that had been meant for me.
I sat beside her bed.
"I spent eighteen months angry at you for leaving."
Claire stared at the blanket.
"You should be angry. I should have come to you sooner."
"You thought I tried to kill you."
"And after I stopped believing that, I still waited. Because I was ashamed. I was afraid you'd look at me and see what they said I was. Broken. Unstable. Dangerous."
I took her hand.
"I see you."
She cried quietly.
Sophie climbed onto the bed between us.
Then a federal agent entered the room.
"Mr. Cole, Mrs. Cole, we have a problem."
He handed me a photograph taken at the Mexican border that morning.
A woman in sunglasses was entering the United States under a false passport.
The face belonged to someone I knew.
Not Vanessa.
Not Evelyn.
My mother-in-law, Margaret Holloway.
Claire's mother.
The woman whose funeral we had attended three years ago.
Claire stared at the image.
"My mother is dead."
May you like
The agent shook his head.
"Apparently, she learned the same trick you did."
