Chapter 14 - The Room Beneath Sophie

The old service corridor led farther than I knew.

Sophie knew because Martin had taken her there once.

"He told me it was a secret game," she said.

Police opened the door.

Inside was a narrow room with a desk, two monitors, document scanners, and shelves of files.

Martin had built an office inside my home.

A hidden camera feed showed Sophie's bedroom, the kitchen, my study, and the driveway.

Claire covered her mouth.

"He watched us."

Lucas opened a cabinet.

Copies of my signatures. Claire's medical records. Sophie's school reports. Vanessa's handwritten notes.

Then he found a folder labeled PHASE THREE.

The plan was simple enough to fit on three pages.

Step one: keep Claire legally dead.

Step two: marry Vanessa to me.

Step three: document Sophie as emotionally disturbed.

Step four: create evidence of my instability.

Step five: remove me from company and guardianship control.

At the bottom was a final line.

IF MARRIAGE FAILS, ACCELERATE MEDICAL EVENT.

"Medical event?"

Lucas searched the next drawer.

He found a medication log.

Small doses of a sedative had been recorded beside dates when I remembered feeling exhausted, confused, or unusually angry.

Every dose had been administered through coffee or bourbon.

The initials next to each entry were V.H.

Vanessa.

Claire's voice was flat. "They were drugging you."

They hadn't just forged instability.

They had created it.

A detective pulled a hard drive from beneath the desk.

"We'll need a warrant to image this."

The screen suddenly powered on by itself.

A video window opened.

Martin appeared live.

"Congratulations," he said. "You finally found the room."

I stepped toward the monitor.

"Where are you?"

"Not important."

Claire held up the recovered documents. "It's over."

Martin smiled.

"No, Claire. You're holding copies."

Behind him, flames rose.

He turned the camera.

Stacks of original trust documents were burning in a metal drum.

Then another figure walked into frame.

Adam Pierce.

Alive. Calm. Smiling.

"Ethan," Adam said, "you built a wonderful company."

He lifted a passport.

"Thank you for giving it to me."
