Chapter 5 - The Wife I Buried

Claire looked nothing like the woman in the portrait hanging over my fireplace.

They were fixed on Martin.

"Move away from Sophie," she said.

Martin lifted his hands. "Claire, don't make this worse."

"You already did."

Sophie ran before I could stop her.

"Mommy!"

Claire's gun lowered instantly.

She dropped to her knees and caught our daughter in both arms.

The sound Sophie made broke something in me. It wasn't a cry. It was relief mixed with grief, like a child finally being allowed to believe her own memory.

Claire buried her face in Sophie's hair.

"I'm sorry, baby. I'm so sorry."

"You let her think you were dead."

Claire looked up.

"I thought you tried to have me killed."

"What?"

She pulled a flash drive from her pocket and tossed it onto the sand between us.

"The night before my crash, I received copies of emails between you and Martin. They talked about removing me from the trust, taking control of my shares, and making sure I never testified."

"I never wrote anything like that."

"I know that now."

"You know now?"

Her face twisted. "I woke up in a stranger's trailer with a fractured skull and no memory of how I got there. By the time I remembered my name, the news said I was dead. Martin had filed the petition. Vanessa had sworn I was unstable. And the emails said my husband wanted me gone."

Instead I looked at Sophie clinging to her neck.

"Why come back secretly?"

"Because I needed proof before I put Sophie in danger."

I laughed once, bitterly. "You put her in danger every time you left her here with Vanessa."

Claire flinched.

She deserved to.

Martin took a careful step backward.

Claire raised the gun again.

"Don't."

Security moved toward him.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Tell Ethan what you found in the car, Claire."

Claire's expression hardened.

"Shut up."

Vanessa smiled through split lipstick.

"Tell him why you really disappeared."

"What is she talking about?"

Claire didn't answer.

Vanessa did.

"There was blood in Claire's car that wasn't hers."

May you like

She pointed at Claire.

"She didn't just survive that night, Ethan. She killed someone."
