Chapter 16 - Vanessa's Last Bargain

We reached the hospital in eleven minutes.
Vanessa was gone.
Security footage showed Adam, disguised in scrubs, taking Vanessa out in a wheelchair.
Police issued an alert.
Claire stood beside me in the parking lot, furious.
"He needs her alive for something."
"The bank."
Lucas nodded. "If Vanessa knows enough to identify the real certificates, Adam needs her."
We searched every financial record belonging to Claire's mother, Margaret Holloway.
At 3:12 a.m., Lucas found an annual fee to a private vault company in downtown Los Angeles.
The account name was not Margaret Holloway.
It was Sophie Claire Cole.
We arrived before opening.
Police waited outside while the manager verified court papers.
The vault had already been accessed that morning.
By Vanessa.
"Impossible," I said. "She was kidnapped."
The manager shook his head. "She came in with a man. She appeared calm."
Claire's expression turned hard.
"She played us again."
I wasn't sure.
The manager brought us the access log. Vanessa had signed at 5:41 a.m.
Beside her signature was a second name.
Dr. Evelyn Hale.
Evelyn was supposed to be in county custody.
A call confirmed she had been released on an emergency medical transfer after collapsing during questioning.
The ambulance transporting her never reached the hospital.
The driver had been Mercer.
Every loose piece was moving at once.
Lucas checked traffic cameras.
A black ambulance matching the description had gone east toward an old Meridian facility in the desert.
We followed with police.
The abandoned treatment center sat beyond Palm Springs, surrounded by dry hills and chain-link fencing.
Inside, we found Vanessa tied to a chair.
She had not gone willingly.
Her mother stood beside her.
Adam held a pistol.
Martin held the metal case containing the certificates.
Mercer guarded the exit.
Evelyn smiled at Claire.
"All my difficult children in one room."
Claire stepped forward.
"Let Vanessa go."
Vanessa looked at her, stunned.
Evelyn laughed. "After what she did to your daughter?"
"I'm not doing it for her. I'm doing it because I'm not you."
Then Martin opened the metal case.
He looked inside.
His face changed.
"These are fake."
Adam turned on Evelyn.
"What did you do?"
Evelyn looked genuinely confused.
Vanessa started laughing through her tears.
"You still don't get it," she said.

She looked straight at Sophie, who was waiting safely with police miles away.
"The real inheritance was never in a bank."
