Chapter 12 - St. Catherine's

Sophie had been taken from a police-protected house.
That fact told me the conspiracy reached farther than I wanted to believe.
Mrs. Alvarez was found unconscious in the garage. The patrol officer assigned outside had received a fake dispatch ordering him two blocks away.
Martin had planned every minute.
Claire blamed herself.
I didn't have time to let her.
We arrived with Lucas and two detectives who stayed out of sight.
"No hero moves," one detective warned me. "We get your daughter first."
Inside, the building smelled like dust and bleach.
A single hallway light was on.
"Daddy?"
Sophie's voice echoed from somewhere upstairs.
I ran toward it.
Claire grabbed me. "Wait."
A speaker crackled overhead.
Evelyn Hale's voice filled the building.
"Welcome back, Claire."
Claire stopped breathing.
"You always were predictable," Evelyn continued. "Threaten the child, and the mother returns to treatment."
I shouted, "Let Sophie go!"
"Mr. Cole, your daughter is safe. Safer than she has been in months."
"You kidnapped her."
"I removed her from an unstable environment."
The language was clinical, polished, almost gentle.
That made it worse.
We found Sophie in an old therapy room behind a locked glass door. She was strapped into a chair but awake.
I smashed the glass with a fire extinguisher.
"Daddy!"
I pulled her free.
Then Claire gasped.
Across the hall stood Evelyn Hale.
Silver hair. Navy coat. No weapon visible.
She looked at Claire with the calm curiosity of a doctor checking an old chart.
"You survived," Evelyn said.
Claire stepped forward. "You knew Martin assaulted me."
"I knew you were fragile."
"You threatened me."
"I protected your family from scandal."
I had never hated anyone so quickly.
Police moved in from both ends of the hall.
Evelyn didn't resist.
She only smiled.
"You think arresting me ends this?"
"It starts it," I said.
"No, Mr. Cole. It ends you."
She nodded toward the detectives.
One of them took out handcuffs.
Then he walked past Evelyn.
And put them on me.
"Ethan Cole," he said, "you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, child endangerment, and the attempted murder of Claire Cole."
May you like
Sophie screamed my name.
Evelyn smiled.
