Chapter 17 - What Claire's Mother Actually Left

Vanessa knew because Margaret Holloway had told her mother years ago.
The certificates were bait.
The fortune everyone had been chasing was mostly tied to a controlling interest in Holloway Coastal Conservancy, a nonprofit land trust with development rights that could only be activated by a unanimous family vote.
Sophie's "one hundred eighty-four million dollars" was a valuation, not cash.
No guardian could simply drain it.
Martin stared at Evelyn.
"You knew?"
"I knew enough."
Evelyn looked at him with contempt. "Your greed is not my accounting problem."
Adam pointed the gun at Martin.
Mercer stepped between them.
Claire grabbed Vanessa's chair and dragged her sideways as the first shot fired.
Chaos exploded.
Police breached the rear door.
Mercer fired twice and ran.
Martin dove behind a desk.
Adam grabbed Evelyn around the neck and used her as a shield.
I rushed toward Vanessa.
"Untie me!" she shouted.
I cut the plastic restraints with a broken piece of metal.
She pushed past me toward Claire.
A shot cracked.
Claire fell.
"Claire!"
I dropped beside her.
Blood spread across her side.
Vanessa pressed both hands to the wound.
"Call an ambulance!"
Martin crawled toward a side door.
I saw him.
He saw me.
I could chase him.
I could hurt him.
I could become exactly what they had spent months telling the world I was.
Claire grabbed my sleeve.
"Stay."
So I stayed.
Police caught Martin outside.
Claire survived the trip to the hospital.
The bullet had missed her liver by less than an inch.
At dawn, Vanessa sat across from me in the waiting room with Claire's blood dried on her hands.
"Why did Margaret tell your mother about the conservancy?" I asked.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
"She didn't. My mother treated Margaret during her last year. She stole the information."
I nodded.
Vanessa began to cry.
"Ethan, I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I loved Sophie."
"No. You wanted to be loved by Sophie. That's different."
She flinched.
Then my phone rang.
A detective spoke quickly.
Mercer had been found.
Dead.

In his pocket was a note with one sentence:
CLAIRE WAS NEVER THE ORIGINAL TARGET.
