Claire laughed without humor.

"They don't treat broken families. They monetize them."

She arrived alone.

"I didn't plan the crash," Vanessa said.

Claire stepped toward her. "You signed a statement calling me suicidal."

"My mother told me you were."

"You knew I was alive."

Vanessa swallowed. "Not at first. I found out six months after Ethan proposed."

"And you stayed."

"Because by then I was in too deep."

"You hurt Sophie."

Her eyes flicked away.

"There is no excuse for that," she said.

"Good. Don't make one."

She looked at Claire. "My mother used your old medical records to convince Martin you were unstable. Adam forged Ethan's signatures. Mercer was supposed to scare you into leaving town. The crash wasn't part of the plan."

Claire's voice turned icy. "Mercer cut my brakes."

"Then he acted on someone's order."

"Whose?"

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"Martin's, maybe. Adam's. I don't know."

"Convenient."

"You want convenient? Fine. My mother believes Sophie belongs under professional guardianship until she turns eighteen. If she gets control, Meridian earns fees from the trust every year. Martin gets legal fees. Adam gets management fees. Everybody gets rich without technically owning a dollar of Sophie's money."

Claire looked horrified.

I said, "And you?"

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I was supposed to marry you."

"Then what?"

She didn't answer.

A gunshot cracked through the night.

Vanessa jerked.

Blood spread across her shoulder.

Claire and I dropped behind the concrete barrier.

A second shot shattered the windshield of my car.
